Since 1997, the Healthy Birth Ini tiative has received funding to re duce the infant mortality rate in Multnomah County, and is currently in its fourth funding cycle of pro moting community-based maternal and child health programs that fo cus on the reduction of infant mor tality, racial disparities, and low birth weight. Because of the racial disparities in infant mortality, the last two cycles have served African-American fami lies exclusively. Program participants, along with community agency representatives and other community members, are engaged and actively involved in the quest to eliminate health dis parities in their own lives and their community. 'At the recognition event, the community partners were given credit for their dedication to the health of mothers, fathers, and chil dren before, during, and in between pregnancies. The International Cen ter for Traditional Childbearing, Urban League of Portland and March of Dimes, received certificates of appreciation for their long-term ser vices to the community to help re duce infant mortality and increase healthy birth outcomes and experi ences. The project aims to help Ronald McDonald House provide an even better home away from home for families with seri ously ill children. The completed project incorpo rated sustainable practices from the demolition and recycling of all waste, to new finishes and eco-friendly flooring throughout the suite, car pet tile accents that look like a patch of fresh grass, low VOC-paints and a d h e siv e s, fo rm a ld e h y d e -fre e kitchen cabinets, solid surface countertops, window coverings, lighting, electrical, plumbing and energy-efficient appliances. The dining, bed and living rooms were completely refurnished and redecorated and the living room fea tures a flat panel TV and a video entertainment system. n e w s e a s o n s m a r k e t.c o m Page 5
